òThe ADA required
the Access Board to develop standards for existing buildings, alterations
and new construction.á This became
known as the ADA Accessibility Guidelines or ADAAG. It was published in July
1991.
òGenerally the
requirements of ADAAG have been adopted into national
and local building codes.á Local regulations cannot be less stringent
than ADAAG.
òA final draft
version of a new ADAAG was published in April 2002.á It is better aligned with the
related building standards and lift and elevator safety
standards.
òThe new ADAAG
continues to permit the use of platform lifts to provide accessibility.
